This time we have prepared a contribution for you in the field of shipping containers. Demand in this area is breaking all records. According to analysts at Drewry Shipping Consultants, the production of containers has increased by more than 200%, and their prices have reached record levels. All this is due to the high demand for maritime transport services.
In 2020, the prices of new containers increased by 75%. Although they were among the lowest ever at the beginning of last year, they reached their highest level since 2011 in the fourth quarter. By the second quarter of 2021, prices for the new 40 'container had already reached $ 6,500, more than twice as much as in the same period last year. This is the highest price level since Drewry began monitoring container prices in 1998.
Production of containers in full swing
The main reason for the high demand for dry cargo containers is the lack of them on the market (which is also one of the main reasons for the drastic increase in freight shipping prices).
China is the world's largest container manufacturer. It increased its production of dry cargo containers by as much as 235% year on year. The production of refrigerators doubled to around 260,000 TEU.
Drewry expects year-round production of new containers to reach 5.2 million TEUs this year, up 67% from 2020.
So far, the main buyers of containers have been lessors- as many as 68% of all new containers. However, experts at Drewry expect shipowners to invest more and more in buying containers to own them. They have had record profits in recent quarters, so they have the funds for this kind of investment.
In the following article, we will write about the prices in shipping, which have been breaking records recently.
